We are so happy to welcome back Casa Nova Fine Beverages as a DATA Member for 2024!

More about them:

Bear River has been at the heart of new world winemaking for hundreds of years and is considered one of the establishing winemaking locations in North America. Our Casa Nova Fine Beverages story began in 2017 when Karen and Brendan Enright realized their dreams of opening a vineyard and winery.

Joining as a co-owner, Piers Greenwood brought a wealth of winemaking experience from the United Kingdom. As a three-time recipient of "English Winemaker of the Year," Piers's extraordinary talent and vision have helped craft our beverages into today's unique and high-quality products.

As wine lovers, we were inspired by the romanticism of wine and aptly named our business after the most famous lover of all, Casa Nova.

With a history in the culinary world, paired with training in viticulture and enology, we were soon producing the distinctive wine and cello products we have become known for.

Inspired by the rich agriculture of the area, we started producing cider in 2018 using 100% Nova Scotian apples. Since then, Cherry Cider, Crabby Grannies, 1606 and Buddy’s Cider have been celebrated across the province and abroad for their crisp and refreshing experience.

Do you know why the ferry to Brier Island is called Margaret’s Justice?

It's named after Margaret Davis, who at the age of 63, walked nearly 300 kms to Halifax and back to defend her honour and protect her family.

The year was 1828, and Davis had recently been widowed and left alone to raise her 9 kids. Knowing the vulnerable position she was in, a gentleman decided to claim her land as his own.

Margaret Davis was not going to go down without a fight. So despite the fact she had no mode of transportation, didn’t speak English, and the odds were stacked against her simply for being a Woman, she started a nearly 300 km walk to Halifax to defend what she knew was rightfully hers.

After weeks of walking she found her way to the courts, pleaded her case to the Judge, and he ruled in her favour. She then began her nearly 300km walk back home.

Nearly 200 years later her story lives on with one of the main Ferries that brings people to Brier Island, being named Margaret’s Justice after her heroic story.

Happy Birthday Maud!! 🐈‍⬛🌷

Maud Kathleen Lewis was born on this day, just outside of Yarmouth, in 1903. She became one of Canada’s most renowned artists after her life and art became a national story in 1965. Her work even got the attention of US President Richard Nixon. Maud has also been the subject of many documentaries, and even a feature length film starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke called Maudie.

Maud moved to Digby in her 30’s after her Mother and Father passed away, and her Brother denied her any of the family inheritance.

She eventually ended up moving to her now famous one bedroom house in Marshalltown, where she lived in poverty with her husband Everett.

The only art training Maud ever got was from her Mother, who taught her how to make Christmas cards. Maud never sold a painting for more than $10 when she was alive, but her paintings now go for 10’s of thousands of dollars each, and have even been sold to the White House.

The famous house she spent most of her life in, is now on display at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. You can visit the Maud Lewis Memorial Park in Marshalltown (just a few minutes from Digby), as well as a replica of her famous colourful house in Seabrook (just ten minutes from Digby).

📸 Here is the display in the Digby Visitor Information Centre that was set up last year.
