The Heart of Nova Scotia’s Folk Art Legacy
Yesterday marked our third "Paint Like Maud" event of the summer.
These workshops empower people of all skill levels to transform discarded materials into something beautiful. It`s about letting go of doubt and embracing the joy and laughter that Maud Lewis herself brought to her art in her tiny Digby home for so many years.
A huge thank you to the Harbourview Inn for hosting us, to Tiffany Barrett for her wonderful guidance, and to everyone who joined us to learn how to paint in Maud`s unique and heartfelt style.

The Maud Lewis Replica House in Digby Neck is one of Digby`s most historic homes. Great place to visit if you`re in Digby and need somewhere to explore, exact replica of her home and all of the beautiful art she created.
Did you know that Maud Lewis painted her home because it was the one place she felt she could truly express her own creativity, and she painted her house where we could all see what she liked looking at?

Maud Lewis, one of Canada’s most beloved folk artists, captured the vibrant spirit of Nova Scotia through her joyful and whimsical paintings.
Born in Yarmouth County and later settling in Marshalltown near Digby, Maud’s art reflected the simple beauty of rural life, from colourful fishing boats to cozy farmhouses and playful animals.
Despite facing significant challenges in life, Maud’s optimism shone through her work, making her an enduring symbol of resilience and creativity.
Today, visitors to the Digby area can explore the places that inspired Maud’s art and experience firsthand the charm and warmth that continue to captivate art lovers around the world.

In April 2017, Mongrel Media released the motion picture Maudie across Canada.
Academy Award® nominees Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, Blue Jasmine, The Shape of Water) and Ethan Hawke star in the true story of Maud Lewis, who overcame the physical challenge of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis to become one of Canada’s premier folk artists. (Mongrel Media)¹
