Where Creativity Meets Community
The story of the Maud Lewis Replica House is really a story about love for local history.
After Maud Lewis’ original painted house was moved to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia for preservation, retired fisherman Murray Ross decided people visiting Digby Neck still needed a way to experience the feeling of stepping inside Maud’s world.
Murray had actually visited Maud and Everett as a child, and his family knew them personally.
So he spent about a year researching the original house and carefully building a replica near his home in Rossway, complete with painted details, furnishings, and even Everett’s little workshop.
Today, visitors from around the world stop along Highway 217 to experience the tiny painted house that keeps Maud’s story alive here in Digby County. #visitnovascotia #visitdigby #maudlewis #folkart
There’s something about a long weekend, isn’t there?
Time with the people you love.
Meals that linger a little longer.
Moments you wish you could carry with you.
And even after it’s over…
that feeling stays.
If you’re already thinking about the next one, maybe it’s time to plan it.
Let it unfold in Digby.
Arrive Friday.
Walk the waterfront, visit the museum, and ease into the evening with a drink on a patio, maybe a little live music drifting through the air.
Saturday, follow the road to Bear River.
A warm latte in hand, a slow wander through galleries and shops, lunch at Myrtle & Rosie’s, and a quiet moment at a local winery.
Sunday, take the drive down Digby Neck to Brier Island.
Step onto the water for a whale watching tour, then spend the night.
Watch the sun set at the lighthouse, where the sky opens wide and time seems to slow.
Monday, take the long way home.
Hike to Balancing Rock, stop at the Maud Lewis Replica House, and let the coastline guide you a little farther.
Next long weekend… follow that feeling.
There’s something special about Digby.
Maybe it’s the way the light dances across the Bay of Fundy.
Or the quiet rhythm of the tide moving in and out of the harbour.
Maybe it’s the taste of fresh Digby scallops, pulled from the sea and served just hours later.
It might be the adventure — whales breaching off Brier Island, scenic drives along Digby Neck, or discovering the charm of Bear River, where colourful galleries and restaurants perch on stilts above the river.
Or maybe it’s simply the feeling you get when you arrive.
A little calmer.
A little happier.
A little closer to the sea.
Come see for yourself.
High tide.
Low tide.
Same quiet magic.
In Bear River, the water rises to meet a village on stilts,
wine waits just up the road,
art fills the galleries,
and coffee is always close by.
Come when the tide is changing.
Stay because something in you changes too.
