Have you seen our new Maud Lewis flags around town?
There are 20 of them, all with some of her best-known artworks.
You can find them all throughout the Town of Digby.
The flags are part of our 60 Days of Maud celebration this fall, which includes free Paint Like Maud events, and free screenings of the movie Maudie.
Maud Lewis (1903–1970) was a beloved Canadian folk artist renowned for her brightly coloured, joyful paintings of rural life in Nova Scotia. Born with birth defects that limited her mobility and later suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, Lewis spent most of her life in a tiny, one-room house near Digby, which she eventually transformed into a vibrant work of art by painting flowers, birds, and scenes on nearly every surface, from the walls to the cookie sheets.
Despite her challenging circumstances, her work—characterized by simple forms, bold outlines, and a lack of perspective—captures an optimistic, childlike view of the world, often featuring oxen, cats, sleigh rides, and landscapes blanketed in deep snow. Her distinctive style has made her one of Canada’s most celebrated and recognizable folk artists, with her art continuing to charm audiences worldwide.
