Joshua Slocum was born on this day in 1844.
Joshua was the first person to sail single-handedly around the world.
He was born in Mount Hanley, Annapolis County, but moved to Brier Island when he was 8 years old.
It was here at a young age that Joshua started to yearn for a life at sea.
After many years of sailing, on April 24th 1895, he set sail in his oyster boat named Spray on a 74,000 km (46,000 miles) trip that would take him 3 years, two month and two days to complete.
Something no one else had ever done before.
Today, you can find a monument of Joshua on Brier Island, right across from the Peter Island Lighthouse, not far from the shop he grew up working at, dreaming of days out a sea.
