Hon. Jill Balser: Houston Gov Invests in Electric City’s New Interpretive Centre
WEYMOUTH – Local stories and heritage are being brought to life in a new way thanks to a Houston Government investment of $60,000 to support the Electric City/La Nouvelle France Society.
The funding will help establish a new interpretive centre in Weymouth, creating space for performances, programming and exhibits that share the history of Electric City and its deep
cultural roots.
Hon. Jill Balser, MLA for Digby-Annapolis, was on site Friday to make the announcement. “This project is about building pride, welcoming visitors, and creating something lasting for our community,” said MLA Balser. “I’m so proud that our Government can support this kind of vision and commitment here in Weymouth.”
The investment was made through the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage, supporting local economic development and cultural tourism.
Electric City, once home to one of North America’s first hydroelectric plants, is a powerful piece of Nova Scotia’s history. The La Nouvelle France Society has been working to celebrate that history through community-led initiatives, including events, performances, and now, the new interpretive centre.
“This kind of work reminds us what’s possible when culture and community come together,” said Balser.
“I want to thank everyone involved for their dedication to bringing this important story to
life.”
