Today, August 15th, is National Acadian Day! It’s a day to celebrate the rich, enduring culture that has shaped our region’s history, from the first French settlers to the vibrant communities we know today.
In the Digby area, you can experience this heritage firsthand:
Weymouth & The Electric City/La Nouvelle France: Acadians are a recognized founding culture of the Weymouth area, as is the community of New France, known as “the Electric City.” Both are integral to the region’s diverse history.
The French Shore: Down the coast, the French Shore is a vibrant hub of Acadian culture. The magnificent Saint Bernard Church stands as a testament to the resilience of the Acadian people, a massive granite structure built through decades of community effort.
Annapolis Royal & Port Royal: As the birthplace of Acadie, this is where the journey began. Visit Port-Royal National Historic Site, a reconstruction of the Habitation from 1605, and explore the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens to walk through layers of history where Acadians once farmed the land.
Taste the Tradition: No celebration is complete without food! Honour the day by enjoying a bowl of authentic rappie pie, a beloved and iconic Acadian dish unique to this region.
Today is a day to reflect on the deep roots and vibrant traditions of Acadian culture that fills the Digby region.
Bonne Fête Nationale de l’Acadie!
