A Community Rallies to Save a Landmark!

##
Did you know that people from across North America are on Brier Island right now to help save the Peter’s Island Lighthouse?
The historic lighthouse, a landmark built in 1909, was decommissioned a decade ago and, due to its remote location on an uninhabited island, began to fall into disrepair. Now, thanks to the dedicated volunteer group Save an Island Lighthouse (SAIL²) and the Municipality of Digby, the restoration project is officially underway.

The project is being led by a team of skilled volunteers who are dedicating their time and expertise to bring this piece of our heritage back to life.

Here you can see a video taken last year that shows a rare up-close look at how bad the exterior has gotten:
Currently, we are in Phase 1 of the project. This involves a three-week effort by volunteers to replace rotten sections of wood and to weather-proof the structure to ensure it can withstand future storms.

Phase 2 will take place next year, which will include replacing the shingles and applying a fresh coat of paint.

Many thanks to everyone who has come together to help save this important landmark, including the many on Brier Island who are making our guests feel welcome as they complete this important project.
